Museum becomes a charity

After 75 years as part of the Charlbury Society, the Museum has now become a charity in its own right.  We are now registered with the Charity Commission as a CIO (Charitable Incorporated Organisation), run by a committee of volunteer Trustees.  The Trustees are supported by other volunteers working behind the scenes and by a loyal band of stewards without whom the museum could not function.

Our change of status means that we will be able to apply for more grants and will help us in our quest to gain accreditation.  Having accreditation means that the museum meets accepted criteria for good museum practice and will give us greater credibility with grant-giving bodies.  It is a big task to undertake for a museum such as ours which is run entirely by volunteers but we are working hard to ensure that we reach the necessary standards.

It was not an easy decision to part company with the Charlbury Society after so many years but we hope that it will ensure that the museum can develop as we hope and believe it should if we are to preserve the history of the town.  The museum and the Charlbury Society still plan to work together as we have done so successfully in the past.  We are very grateful for their ongoing support.
