The Playing Close has been at the centre of Charlbury life for hundreds of years. But it wasn’t always the tranquil, green space that it is today. In the past it rang with the sounds of sawing and hammering, of sheep and horses brought to market there, and smelt strongly of dung and smoke. People built hovels and pigsties on it and it was bordered by farmhouses, homes and schools, as well as the town lock-up.
Our exhibition this year explores its rich and varied history through the people who ran their businesses there, the houses that were built around it and the events that took place on it. We have some of the original documents relating to its ownership, follow the life stories of some of the tradespeople, and the histories of the houses built around it. Do visit us to find out more about its fascinating history.
